☆ EV charging for the U.S. freight trucking market is starting to scale

Einride plans to open many EV charging stations for freight trucking on the West and East coasts, though California is the only state in which there are any EV freight charging stations of scale today. Voltera, which develops, owns and operates EV infrastructure, said the site was permitted, built, electrified and operational in under 18 months. "In the world of charging infrastructure, that's pretty remarkable," its CEO Matt Horton said in a statement. One of the first EV charging stations of scale for freight trucks is opening near the major ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, California, as the trucking market takes some limited, but significant steps to build the infrastructure required for a long-term transition to EV trucking and net-zero shipping. Additional EV charging projects at ports in New York and New Jersey, as well as the Pacific Northwest, are planned.

Most of the nation's power lines are above ground because its cheaper to do it that way. But more utilities have been burying power lines in response to bigger and more destructive natural disasters. That fire was started by lightening, not PG&E's power lines, but it is a reminder of the lasting damage that wildfires can cause. The Public Utilities Commission is considering two other plans that would include both burying power lines and using protective coverings. While burying power lines is the most effective way to prevent wildfires, it is not a quick fix.

This comment needs clarification. Diesel generators are being used only sporadically as a temporary bridge until the infrastructure is built to deliver clean energy to electric trucks. It went unmentioned that Southern California Edison is working to eliminate this temporary and undesirable occurrence.

CNN —Hurricane Hilary is expected to slam into Southern California on Sunday as a rare tropical storm, unleashing floods, fierce winds and heavy downpours as residents evacuate, parks and beaches close and first responders brace for water rescues. Although Hilary is forecast to move north from Baja California into Southern California Sunday afternoon, its impacts will be felt earlier. First responders have also pre-positioned to respond quickly and perform water rescues from flooded areas, state officials said. There are “more than 7,500 boots on the ground” already deployed to help protect from the impact of Hurricane Hilary, according to the release from Newsom’s office. “There will be power outages across Southern California,” Ward said.

CNN —Residents in the Southwest are bracing for heavy rains and potentially catastrophic flooding as Hurricane Hilary is expected to pummel the region as a rare tropical storm beginning Sunday and lasting into next week. Its core is expected to pass close to the peninsula Saturday night and then weaken into a tropical storm as it crosses into the US and Southern California. The threat has triggered California’s first ever tropical storm warning extending from the state’s southern border to just north of Los Angeles. “Preparations for the impacts of flooding from rainfall should be completed as soon as possible, as heavy rain will increase ahead of the center on Saturday,” the hurricane center said. UBS is initiating coverage of a key renewable energy company with a buy rating thanks to projects it's involved in that will benefit from the Biden administration's environmental efforts. The firm has a price target of $60 on Ameresco , which represents 47% upside against the stock's Monday closing price of $40.78. Ameresco is a diversified player in the renewable space with projects that range from solar power to landfill gas capture to battery storage. AMRC YTD mountain Shares of energy company Ameresco have declined roughly 18% from the start of 2023. "While this presents a near-term risk for AMRC, we ultimately expect the IRA to drive increased demand and lower project costs."

Meanwhile, BlackRock is part of another group investing $650 million to build chargers along freight routes. Because port real estate is at a premium, most early drayage charging projects will be "behind the fence" on trucking company property, experts said. Electric trucks cannot operate without chargers, but it does not make sense to build chargers if drivers are not using electric trucks. Prologis, the biggest U.S. warehouse owner, created its mobility business to install electric truck chargers and solar panels. "A marriage between real estate and energy infrastructure" will be needed to accelerate the transition to electric-powered trucking, Prologis Mobility's Holland said.

Under such a scenario Duke Energy would likely have years of low emissions punctuated by a single year of high emissions.
